Desire, simply put, is to say “I want”. In order to get what you want, you must first believe you are worthy of receiving. On the surface, Butter & Filth looks like a pole dance studio. But it’s actually so much more than that. Its a place where you go to discover and explore your own boundlessness. It’s a dedicated space to contend with what you need, desire, and and can become in a creative way that centers the transformative nature of sensual dance.
Core to the studio is Nia’s signature curriculum, The Creative Erotic Method.
Butter & Filth is a petri dish for women who dare invite uniqueness, possibility and growth into their lives.
History
Butter & Filth was founded by artist, writer, and educator Nia Burks. She has over fifteen years of experience teaching at the university level and working across movement, visual art, media ethics, art history, and performance.
What began as a pole dance studio quickly revealed itself to be something else entirely.
Butter & Filth was built to give time and space to women’s and their own bodies, desire, to the parts of themselves that challenge palatability. or the status quo Traditional fitness spaces couldn’t hold that because Butter & Filth isn’t about fitness. It didn’t fit into conventional self-help frameworks. Or even art school. B&F isn’t a pole studio, its a place that has poles, and pole dance is used to cut the shit and get to the core of her clients desire for power and pleasure.
Rooted in the aesthetics and realities of club-style pole dancing, but definitely not confined to it, Nia developed a signature curriculum called The Creative Erotic Method. It’s a practice that merges the rawness of creativity with the aliveness of eroticism and situates the wanting female body as a site of knowledge rather than decoration.
Over time, Butter & Filth has grown into a multidisciplinary studio offering movement training, writing programs, visual art, and high-concept curriculum designed for women who want more than confidence (they want courage).
